Styes can be both uncomfortable and disruptive, especially when they interfere with daily tasks like reading or working on a screen. While they’re typically minor, the pain, sensitivity, and visible swelling they cause can make it difficult to ignore. At InMotion Health, with same-day appointments and personalized treatment plans, our providers ensure you get the care you need quickly and comfortably.

What Are Styes?

A stye is a red, painful bump that forms on the edge of the eyelid, typically caused by a blocked oil gland or bacterial infection. Also known as a hordeolum, styes may resemble pimples and can appear on either the outer or inner part of the eyelid. While usually harmless, they can cause significant irritation, sensitivity to light, or watery eyes. Though minor, eye issues like styes can be disruptive to your comfort and daily routine without attentive care.

How Are Styes Treated?

Treatment for a stye begins with a virtual or in-home consultation with an InMotion Health provider. We’ll assess the size, location, and severity of your stye, as well as ask about your medical history and any past occurrences. Most styes will resolve on their own within a week, but if the swelling, redness, or discomfort becomes more severe, we may recommend additional care.

Common treatment options include warm compresses to promote drainage, over-the-counter pain relief, and, in some cases, prescription antibiotic ointments or drops. If the stye is particularly persistent or causing vision issues, we may arrange for a referral to an eye specialist.

Stye Symptoms

Styes typically begin with localized tenderness or swelling on the eyelid, followed by the formation of a small red bump. You may also experience:

  • Pain or discomfort in the affected eye
  • Redness and swelling of the eyelid
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive tearing
  • A gritty feeling in the eye
  • Pus discharge if the stye ruptures

What Causes Styes?

Styes are most often caused by a bacterial infection, commonly Staphylococcus aureus, that affects the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes or within the eyelid Factors that increase the risk of developing styes include:

  • Blocked glands
  • Poor eyelid hygiene
  • Underlying skin conditions like rosacea or blepharitis
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Use of expired makeup
  • Wear contact lenses without proper cleaning or storage practices

Why Is Stye Treatment Important?

While a single stye may not be dangerous, it can cause significant discomfort and interfere with daily activities by affecting your vision and causing pain or swelling. In some cases, untreated styes can result in complications such as the spread of infection to surrounding tissues (cellulitis), the development of chronic styes or chalazion, scarring or blockage of the oil glands, and ongoing eye irritation or dryness. Seeking treatment early helps relieve symptoms, reduce inflammation, and prevent these issues.

How Can I Prevent Future Styes?

Preventing future styes begins with practicing good eye hygiene. This includes washing your hands before touching your face or eyes, removing makeup thoroughly each night, and avoiding the sharing of cosmetics or eye care products. It’s also important to replace mascara or eyeliner every three to six months and to clean your eyelids gently with a warm cloth or a dedicated eyelid scrub, especially if you’re prone to buildup. If you wear contact lenses, avoid using them during an active stye and be sure to disinfect them properly.
