A sore throat can start as a mild scratchy sensation or develop into painful swallowing, swollen glands, and even fever. Whether caused by a viral infection, bacterial illness like strep throat, or environmental irritants, a sore throat can disrupt your daily routine and signal a more serious underlying condition. At InMotion Health, we bring expert, convenient care to your doorstep so you can start feeling better sooner.

What Is a Sore Throat?

A sore throat, also known as pharyngitis, is inflammation or irritation of the throat. It may be accompanied by pain when swallowing, a hoarse voice, or swollen lymph nodes. Sore throats are commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, but bacterial infections like group A streptococcus (strep throat) are also possible and require medical treatment.

How Is a Sore Throat Treated?

To begin treatment for a sore throat at InMotion Health, a provider will assess your symptoms, review your medical history, and evaluate any potential exposure to infections. If a bacterial cause such as strep throat is suspected, we offer rapid in-home point-of-care testing. If a viral cause is more likely, we can perform rapid in-home testing for flu, COVID-19, and mono. If more detailed results are needed, we can send a throat swab to our lab partner for further testing.

Depending on the cause, treatment may include prescription antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infections, over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, saltwater gargles and throat lozenges to reduce irritation, and strategies to stay hydrated and rest. Every care plan is personalized to ensure prompt, effective relief without unnecessary trips to the clinic.

Sore Throat Treatment in Pediatric Patients

Sore throats are especially common in children and can escalate quickly. At InMotion Health, we specialize in pediatric care and can evaluate your child at home, minimizing stress and discomfort. We assess for signs of strep throat, fever, rash, or other symptoms that may indicate a need for testing or prescription medication.

Sore Throat Symptoms

Symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause, but often include:

  • Pain or scratchiness in the throat
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Swollen tonsils or visible white patches
  • Hoarse voice
  • Fever, headache, or body aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

If your sore throat lasts more than a few days, or is accompanied by high fever, rash, or difficulty breathing, seek prompt medical attention.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

Common causes include:

  • Viral infections (cold, flu, mono, COVID-19)
  • Bacterial infections (strep throat, tonsillitis)
  • Allergies or postnasal drip
  • Dry indoor air or pollution
  • Acid reflux (GERD)
  • Smoking or secondhand smoke exposure

Why Is Sore Throat Treatment Important?

While many sore throats are mild and self-limiting, others may require medical intervention, especially when caused by a bacterial infection. Early treatment can alleviate painful symptoms, prevent complications such as abscesses or rheumatic fever, and reduce the risk of spreading infection to others.

How Do I Support My Recovery From a Sore Throat?

Staying well-hydrated with water and warm teas can soothe the throat, while resting your voice and body supports healing. Using a humidifier can ease throat dryness, and it’s important to take all medications exactly as prescribed. Avoiding irritants like smoke or strong scents can also reduce inflammation. If your symptoms worsen or persist beyond a few days, it’s important to follow up for reassessment.
