Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, triggering an intensely itchy rash. It spreads quickly through close physical contact, which is why early diagnosis and treatment are essential, not only to relieve symptoms but to prevent transmission to others in your household or community. Our virtual and in-home urgent care services are designed to get you relief fast, with same-day appointments, testing, and tailored treatment plans.

What Is Scabies?

Scabies is a skin infestation caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. These microscopic mites tunnel into the top layer of your skin to live and lay eggs, which leads to a red, bumpy rash and severe itching. The condition is not related to hygiene and can affect anyone regardless of age or cleanliness. Scabies is common in households, schools, care facilities, and other settings where close contact is frequent.

How Is Scabies Treated?

Our licensed provider will review your symptoms and conduct a visual assessment. Once scabies is confirmed or strongly suspected, we’ll design a personalized treatment plan, which may include prescription topical creams like permethrin to kill the mites, oral antiparasitic medications for more severe or resistant cases, and antihistamines or topical steroids to reduce itching and inflammation.

Symptoms of Scabies

The most common symptoms include:

  • Intense itching, especially at night
  • Red, pimple-like bumps or a rash
  • Thin, wavy burrow tracks on the skin
  • Sores caused by scratching
  • Commonly affected areas include the hands, wrists, elbows, waist, and genital region

In infants and young children, scabies may also affect the face, scalp, palms, and soles.

What Causes Scabies?

Scabies is caused by direct skin-to-skin contact with a person who has the condition. It can also spread through contact with infested bedding, clothing, or furniture. The mites can live on skin for 1–2 months but survive only 2–3 days off the body, making shared environments a key source of exposure.

Why Is Scabies Treatment Important?

Prompt treatment of scabies is essential to prevent worsening symptoms and complications such as secondary bacterial infections from scratching. Early intervention can significantly reduce the spread of mites, relieve discomfort, shorten the duration of infestation, and help prevent chronic irritation or repeated outbreaks. Because scabies is highly contagious, swift and complete household treatment is key to breaking the cycle of reinfestation.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Scabies?

We recommend washing all bedding, towels, and clothing in hot water and drying them on high heat. Non-washable items should be sealed in plastic bags for at least 72 hours, and furniture and carpets should be vacuumed thoroughly. Avoid close skin contact with others until your provider confirms it’s safe to resume. Be sure to use all medications exactly as directed.
