If you’ve spent too much time in the sun and are now feeling the sting, InMotion Health is here to help. Our team provides personalized, at-home urgent care throughout the Fort Lauderdale area so you can get fast relief without a trip to a clinic. Whether you’re dealing with mild redness or painful blistering, we deliver compassionate, effective sunburn care directly to your doorstep.

What Is Sunburn?

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. It typically affects the outer layer of the skin, but severe cases can damage deeper tissues and cause systemic symptoms such as fever, dehydration, or fatigue. While a sunburn might seem minor at first, it can lead to long-term consequences like skin aging and increased risk of skin cancer if left untreated or repeated frequently.

How Is Sunburn Treated?

Sunburn treatment begins with an in-home or virtual visit, during which our provider will assess the severity of your symptoms, review your sun exposure history, and look for signs of blistering, peeling, or possible infection. Based on this evaluation, we may recommend a combination of therapies such as cool compresses, soothing lotions like aloe vera, and topical corticosteroids to ease inflammation and discomfort.

Pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be suggested to reduce pain and fever. If there’s any sign of blistering that could lead to infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. Hydration is also important, especially if there’s fluid loss from more extensive burns. To support healing and prevent complications, we offer guidance on proper skin care and provide a tailored care plan to meet your needs.

Symptoms of Sunburn

Sunburn symptoms typically appear a few hours after sun exposure and peak within 24–48 hours. Common signs include:

  • Redness and tenderness of the skin
  • Swelling and warmth over the affected area
  • Blistering or peeling
  • Itching or burning sensations
  • Fatigue, headache, or mild fever in more extensive burns

Severe sunburn may also cause dehydration, chills, or dizziness in young children, older adults, or individuals with preexisting health conditions.

What Causes Sunburn?

Sunburn occurs when UV radiation damages the DNA in your skin cells faster than your body can repair it. This triggers an inflammatory response so your body can remove damaged skin and begin the healing process. Risk factors for sunburn include:

  • Extended outdoor activity during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Light or sensitive skin types
  • Use of certain medications that increase sun sensitivity
  • Lack of protective clothing or sunscreen
  • Reflective environments (e.g., water, sand, or snow)

Why Is Sunburn Treatment Important?

Prompt treatment for sunburn is essential, even for mild cases. Early intervention helps alleviate discomfort, accelerate healing, and prevent complications like dehydration or secondary infections. It also minimizes long-term skin damage, which can contribute to premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. For children and individuals with a history of frequent sunburns, timely care is especially important due to their increased vulnerability to long-term skin issues.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Sunburn?

To support your recovery from sunburn, our providers recommend staying well-hydrated to replenish fluids lost through heat and inflammation. Applying cool compresses and gentle moisturizers frequently can soothe the skin and reduce irritation. It’s best to avoid further sun exposure until the skin has fully healed and to wear loose, breathable clothing to minimize friction.

Patients should avoid popping blisters or peeling damaged skin, as this can increase the risk of infection or scarring. Following your provider’s treatment instructions closely is key to a smooth recovery. If you notice signs of infection, such as pus, increased redness, or a spreading rash, contact us right away for a follow-up visit.
