Acid reflux and heartburn are common digestive issues that can significantly impact your comfort and quality of life. At InMotion Health, we provide prompt, personalized care to help you find relief without waiting rooms or rushed appointments. Whether your symptoms are occasional or persistent, our virtual and in-home services are designed to identify the cause and create an effective treatment plan that fits your lifestyle.

What Is Acid Reflux & Heartburn?

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows backward into the esophagus, the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. This backflow can irritate the lining of the esophagus, often resulting in a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Heartburn is the most recognizable symptom of acid reflux, but not everyone with reflux experiences heartburn. Frequent episodes may be diagnosed as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), a more chronic form of the condition.

How Are Acid Reflux & Heartburn Treated?

At InMotion Health, treatment for acid reflux and heartburn begins with either a virtual or in-home consultation. During your visit, we review your symptoms, diet, lifestyle habits, and any underlying health conditions that may be contributing to discomfort. If you opt for in-home care, we can perform point-of-care testing for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a common cause of acid reflux and other digestive symptoms. If results are positive, we’ll prescribe the appropriate treatment to effectively clear the infection.

However, H. pylori is just one of many potential causes of heartburn and reflux. Since these symptoms can stem from a variety of underlying factors, your treatment plan will be personalized to address your specific triggers and lifestyle. This may include practical changes—such as avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, or late-night meals—along with antacids or acid-reducing medications if appropriate. We’ll also provide guidance on meal timing and portion control, recommend elevating your head during sleep to reduce nighttime symptoms, and develop a tailored treatment plan to fit your needs.

Acid Reflux & Heartburn Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

  • A burning sensation in the chest or throat (heartburn)
  • Sour or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Regurgitation of food or stomach acid
  • Chronic cough or hoarseness
  • Chest discomfort after meals

These symptoms can vary in intensity and may be worse after eating or when lying down.

What Causes Acid Reflux & Heartburn?

Several factors contribute to acid reflux and heartburn, including:

  • Overeating or eating too quickly
  • Obesity or pregnancy
  • Smoking or alcohol use
  • Certain medications (like NSAIDs or blood pressure drugs)
  • Eating trigger foods (such as citrus, chocolate, or fatty meals)
  • Lying down too soon after eating

Why Is Acid Reflux & Heartburn Treatment Important?

While occasional heartburn may seem harmless, frequent or unmanaged acid reflux can lead to more serious complications. If left untreated, it may result in esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), strictures (narrowing due to scar tissue), Barrett’s esophagus (a precancerous condition), or chronic respiratory symptoms and dental erosion. Timely intervention not only reduces discomfort but also protects your long-term digestive and overall health.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Acid Reflux & Heartburn?

Supporting your recovery from acid reflux involves a combination of medication adherence and daily habits. Our providers recommend eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding foods and drinks that are known to trigger reflux, such as acidic, spicy, or fatty items. After meals, stay upright for at least two hours to prevent backflow of stomach acid, and sleep with your head elevated to reduce nighttime symptoms. It’s also important to follow all medication instructions closely and keep track of your symptoms to better identify patterns and avoid recurrence.
