Diarrhea is a common but disruptive condition that can interfere with your ability to work, travel, rest, or care for others. At InMotion Health, we understand that even a seemingly minor issue like diarrhea can be uncomfortable and even dangerous if left untreated. That’s why we offer fast, discreet, and convenient care, either virtually or in the comfort of your home.

What Is Diarrhea?

Diarrhea is defined as loose, watery stools occurring more frequently than usual, typically three or more times in a 24-hour period. It’s often a sign that your digestive system is trying to rid itself of an irritant, such as an infection or food intolerance. While most cases are short-lived and resolve within a few days, more severe or prolonged diarrhea may indicate an underlying issue that needs medical attention.

How Is Diarrhea Treated?

With both virtual and in-home visits, our licensed provider will begin by evaluating your symptoms, medical history, recent travel, and diet to identify the likely cause.. Supportive care is usually recommended and may include hydration guidance and bland diet advice. If a bacterial infection is suspected, appropriate antibiotics will be prescribed. If you opt for our in-home care, we also offer stool testing through our trusted partners, with results promptly shared during follow-up. Prescription medications, if indicated, are included as part of your tailored treatment plan.

Diarrhea Symptoms

Diarrhea symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Loose, watery stools
  • Abdominal cramping or pain
  • Urgency to use the bathroom
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever or chills
  • Fatigue and lightheadedness
  • Signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dizziness, or decreased urination

If you experience diarrhea lasting more than two days (or 24 hours in children), or if symptoms are accompanied by high fever, bloody stool, or severe dehydration, seek medical care promptly.

What Causes Diarrhea?

Diarrhea has many potential causes, including:

  • Viral infections (e.g., norovirus, rotavirus)
  • Bacterial infections (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli)
  • Food poisoning
  • Medication side effects, especially antibiotics
  • Food intolerances, such as lactose or gluten
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other chronic conditions
  • Recent travel to areas with contaminated food or water

Why Is Diarrhea Treatment Important?

Although diarrhea is usually mild and short-lived, it can lead to serious complications if not addressed promptly. One of the most immediate risks is dehydration, which can be especially dangerous for children, older adults, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Receiving timely treatment helps replenish lost fluids and electrolytes, shortens the duration of symptoms, and reduces the likelihood of complications such as fatigue, weakness, or hospitalization.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Diarrhea?

There are several simple yet important ways to support your recovery from diarrhea. Staying hydrated is crucial; drink clear fluids, broths, or electrolyte solutions frequently throughout the day. Focus on eating bland, easy-to-digest foods such as toast, rice, bananas, and applesauce, and avoid irritants like dairy, greasy or spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol until symptoms improve. Be sure to rest and monitor your condition, noting any changes.
