Whether it’s caused by a stomach virus, food poisoning, or another underlying health issue, vomiting can be sudden, disruptive, and deeply uncomfortable. Luckily, our on-demand urgent care services offer fast, compassionate treatment through virtual consultations or in-home visits. We’ll assess your symptoms, deliver targeted care, and help prevent dehydration or complications.

What Is Vomiting?

Vomiting is the forceful expulsion of the stomach’s contents through the mouth, typically triggered by irritation in the stomach or signals from the brain’s vomiting center. It can be brief and self-resolving or a sign of something more serious. Vomiting is often accompanied by nausea, sweating, and weakness, and may be caused by infection, toxins, or digestive issues.

How Is Vomiting Treated?

During your visit, our licensed medical provider will come to your home to gather vital signs, perform a physical assessment, and review your symptoms, medical history, and any recent food intake or physical activity to help determine the cause. We can perform in‑home point‑of‑care testing to rule out viral and bacterial causes of vomiting, such as influenza, COVID‑19, and H. pylori. We can also perform rapid pregnancy tests and urinalysis in your home to help rule out pregnancy or a urinary tract infection as the cause. If further testing is needed, we’ll send samples to our trusted laboratory partners.

In many cases, treatment is focused on rehydration, rest, and relieving nausea and/or discomfort. We may recommend fluids to prevent dehydration, anti-nausea or antiemetic medications to control symptoms, and dietary guidance to help you transition back to solid foods safely. If your symptoms suggest an infection or another underlying issue, we may conduct further diagnostic tests and provide prescription medications as appropriate.

Vomiting Symptoms

In addition to the act of vomiting itself, you may experience:

  • Nausea or queasiness
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Sweating or dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Headache or fever (especially with infection)

If vomiting persists for more than 24 hours or is accompanied by signs of dehydration, confusion, blood, or severe pain, prompt emergency medical evaluation is essential.

What Causes Vomiting?

Vomiting can be triggered by a wide range of causes, including:

  • Viral or bacterial infections (e.g., stomach flu, food poisoning)
  • Motion sickness
  • Pregnancy (morning sickness)
  • Medications or anesthesia
  • Overeating or alcohol consumption
  • Gastrointestinal disorders (such as GERD or ulcers)
  • Migraine headaches
  • Stress or anxiety

Identifying the underlying cause helps guide appropriate treatment and prevent recurrence.

Why Is Vomiting Treatment Important?

Although occasional vomiting may resolve on its own, untreated or prolonged episodes can lead to dehydration, imbalanced electrolytes, and delays in diagnosing more serious health conditions. Seeking prompt care helps reduce discomfort, prevent complications, and ensure any underlying causes, such as infections, medication reactions, or gastrointestinal disorders, are identified and properly treated.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Vomiting?

After beginning treatment, there are several important steps you can take to support recovery. Start by sipping fluids slowly to stay hydrated. Rest as much as possible to give your body time to heal. When you feel ready to eat, introduce bland foods like toast, rice, or bananas. Be sure to take any prescribed medications as directed and avoid common triggers, including greasy foods, strong odors, and motion.
