Read MoreColds are among the most common illnesses, affecting millions of people every year. While most colds are mild and self-limiting, they can cause significant discomfort and disruption to your daily routine. At InMotion Health, we provide expert care for cold symptoms, offering customized treatment plans and trusted support—all in the comfort of your own home.
What Are Colds?
The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, most often caused by rhinoviruses. It typically affects the nose, throat, and sinuses and spreads easily through respiratory droplets or contaminated surfaces. While colds can affect anyone at any time of year, they are especially prevalent during the fall and winter months.
How Are Colds Treated?
A licensed InMotion Health provider will evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and any recent exposures to determine whether your illness is viral or potentially caused by the flu, COVID-19, or a bacterial infection. With our in-home service, we can perform point-of-care testing for common illnesses such as COVID-19, flu, mono, RSV, and strep. If further evaluation is needed, we can also collect diagnostic samples and send them to our trusted lab partner, HealthTrackRx, for comprehensive PCR testing.
Your personalized treatment plan may include over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve congestion, cough, or sore throat, as well as fever reducers and pain relievers. We’ll also offer guidance on hydration, rest, and supportive care. Our goal is to provide symptom relief and early intervention to prevent complications or worsening illness.
Cold Treatment in Pediatric Patients
Children are particularly susceptible to colds, often experiencing several each year due to developing immune systems and frequent exposure in school or daycare settings. InMotion Health offers pediatric-focused care that helps parents understand safe medication use, hydration needs, and signs to watch for in case symptoms worsen.
Cold Symptoms
Cold symptoms typically appear one to three days after exposure to the virus and may include:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Mild fatigue or headache
- Low-grade fever (especially in children)
Symptoms usually last 7 to 10 days but can linger longer depending on your overall health and immune response.
What Causes Colds?
Colds are caused by viral infections, most often by rhinoviruses, but they can also result from other viral strains such as:
- Coronavirus (non-COVID)
- Adenovirus
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
These viruses are easily spread through close contact, respiratory droplets, and touching contaminated surfaces.
Why Is Cold Treatment Important?
While most colds are not dangerous, timely treatment is still important. Prompt care can alleviate discomfort, speed up recovery, and prevent secondary infections like sinusitis, bronchitis, or ear infections. It also helps minimize disruption to daily life, school, or work and allows us to rule out more serious conditions such as the flu or COVID-19.
How Do I Support My Recovery From Colds?
We recommend drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, using a humidifier to ease nasal and sinus congestion, and getting adequate rest to allow your body to heal. Avoiding smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke is also crucial, as it can further irritate your airways. Take all medications as recommended and stay in close contact with your provider.
