Read MorePink eye, or conjunctivitis, is a common and highly contagious eye condition that causes redness, irritation, discharge, and a gritty or itchy sensation in one or both eyes. While many cases are mild, some forms of pink eye require medical treatment to prevent complications and stop the spread of infection. At InMotion Health, we bring personalized, same-day care for pink eye directly to your home, helping you or your child recover quickly and comfortably.
What Is Pink Eye?
Pink eye occurs when the thin, transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and covers the white part of your eyeball (the conjunctiva) becomes inflamed. This inflammation makes blood vessels more visible, giving the eye a pink or red appearance. Pink eye can affect people of all ages and may result from infections, allergies, or irritants. While viral cases are most common and often resolve on their own, bacterial pink eye typically requires antibiotics to heal and prevent further spread.
How Is Pink Eye Treated?
Treatment for pink eye at InMotion Health begins with a virtual or in-home consultation. Our licensed providers will assess your symptoms, medical history, and any recent exposures to help determine the underlying cause. If needed, we’ll perform a physical eye exam or collect a sample from your home to confirm a bacterial infection using our trusted lab partner, HealthTrackRx.
Based on your diagnosis, your treatment may include prescription antibiotic eye drops or ointments for bacterial conjunctivitis, antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis, and supportive care such as cool compresses and artificial tears. If pink eye is caused by irritants or allergens, we will also provide personalized avoidance guidance.
Pink Eye Treatment in Pediatric Patients
Pink eye is especially common among children and spreads quickly in daycare or school settings. If your child is diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis, we’ll prescribe safe, effective treatment and offer guidance for minimizing discomfort and preventing reinfection. We also provide school notes if needed for return after contagious symptoms resolve.
Pink Eye Symptoms
Common symptoms of pink eye include:
- Redness or pink discoloration of the eye
- Itching or burning sensation
- Watery or thick yellow/green discharge
- Crusting on the eyelids, especially after sleep
- Gritty feeling or irritation
- Sensitivity to light
- Swollen eyelids
What Causes Pink Eye?
Pink eye can result from several causes:
- Viral infections: Often linked to colds or respiratory viruses; highly contagious
- Bacterial infections: Caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus or Streptococcus
- Allergies: Triggered by pollen, pet dander, or dust
- Irritants: Such as smoke, pool chlorine, or contact lenses
Why Is Pink Eye Treatment Important?
Treating pink eye promptly is important to avoid complications such as corneal inflammation, more serious infections, or the unnecessary spread of illness to others. Early care relieves discomfort, helps prevent missed work or school, and reduces the chance of spreading infection; prompt treatment also ensures that you only use antibiotics when appropriate, avoiding overuse.
How Do I Support My Recovery From Pink Eye?
To promote healing and prevent reinfection, avoid rubbing or touching your eyes, wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and disinfect common surfaces such as doorknobs, phones, and pillowcases. Avoid sharing personal items like towels, washcloths, or makeup, and replace any eye makeup or contact lenses used while infected. Our providers will offer continued follow-up to ensure your eyes are healing properly.
