What Are Sinus Infections?

Sinus infections (sinusitis) occur when the cavities around your nasal passages become swollen or inflamed. This inflammation can be triggered by viral infections, seasonal allergies, or clogged nasal passages. While many sinus infections improve on their own, some require medical attention, especially if symptoms linger or worsen.

How Are Sinus Infections Treated?

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms. We’ll send a medical provider to your home for an assessment, including point-of-care testing—all from the comfort of your home. If needed, we can collect swabs for more detailed testing through our trusted lab partners. For viral sinusitis, supportive care is key: we recommend rest, hydration, saline nasal rinses, and over-the-counter decongestants.

If a bacterial infection is suspected based on symptoms and testing, we will prescribe appropriate, tailored antibiotic treatment. In cases of persistent or chronic sinusitis, we’ll guide you on further steps. All care is delivered virtually or at-home; no clinic visits required.

Sinus Infection Symptoms

Signs and symptoms can vary depending on severity of the infection and the individual. Common signs of sinusitis include:

  • Facial pressure or pain—especially around your eyes, cheeks, or forehead
  • Nasal congestion or blockage
  • Thick, yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Reduced sense of smell or taste
  • Headache or ear pressure
  • Toothache-like pain in the upper jaw
  • Fatigue or general feeling of unwellness
  • Low-grade fever

Pay attention if symptoms persist beyond 7–10 days or worsen after initial improvement.

What Causes Sinus Infections?

Understanding the cause is essential to proper treatment and future prevention. There are a variety of causes, including:

  • Viral infection, such as a cold or flu virus
  • Bacterial infection, often developing after a viral upper respiratory illness
  • Allergic inflammation from pollen, dust, or pet dander
  • Structural issues, like nasal polyps or a deviated septum
  • Environmental irritants, including smoke, pollution, or stale air

Why Is Sinus Infection Treatment Important?

When left untreated, sinusitis can evolve into more severe conditions such as chronic infections that linger for weeks or even months. In rare cases, the infection may spread to the eyes or brain. It can also exacerbate existing respiratory conditions like asthma, making symptoms harder to manage. Beyond the physical complications, ongoing pain, pressure, and fatigue can significantly impact your quality of life.

How Do Sinus Infections Differ From Other Infections?

Unlike the common cold, which is short-lived and usually presents mild symptoms and clear mucus, sinusitis typically lasts longer and causes facial pressure and thick, discolored nasal discharge. Sinus infections also differ from allergic rhinitis, which causes itchy eyes, sneezing, and watery nasal drainage; symptoms not usually seen with sinusitis. Other respiratory infections like bronchitis, RSV, or pneumonia tend to involve deeper chest symptoms, such as a persistent cough or shortness of breath.

Sinus Infection FAQs

What are the common symptoms of sinus infections?

Some of the most common symptoms of sinus infections include facial pressure or pain, yellow or green nasal discharge, nasal congestion, headache, ear pressure, and a reduced sense of smell or taste.

How are sinus infections diagnosed?

Typically, a sinus infection is diagnosed with a clinical evaluation, a physical exam, and occasionally, further testing. Usually, discussing your symptoms and looking at the nose and throat is enough for a diagnosis.

What treatments are available for sinus infections?

The exact treatment for your sinus infection will depend on the cause and how severe your symptoms are. Rest, hydration, a nasal rinse, and over-the-counter decongestants are often enough. If a bacterial infection is the cause, antibiotics may be needed.

When should I seek urgent care for a sinus infection?

If your symptoms don’t improve within a week, your symptoms become worse, or you have a high fever, then, yes, you should seek out urgent care.

Can sinus infections resolve without antibiotics?

Yes, most sinus infections do resolve without antibiotics. If a sinus infection is caused by a virus, antibiotics won’t be an effective treatment. Nasal sprays, hydration, and rest are typically enough.

What are the complications of untreated sinus infections?

An untreated sinus infection can lead to chronic sinusitis, a decreased sense of smell, ear infections, and, in rare cases, severe sepsis and meningitis.

How can allergies contribute to sinus infections?

Allergies can often make you more susceptible to sinus infections. The allergic reaction can lead to inflammation and swelling of the nasal passages, which blocks the openings that drain mucus from the sinuses. When the mucus can’t drain, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.

How are sinus infections tested at home or by providers?

At home, you can determine that you have a sinus infection based on the symptoms you are experiencing. Providers, on the other hand, will evaluate your symptoms and perform a physical exam. They may also use a nasal endoscope to take a closer look at your sinuses.

Are sinus infections contagious?

Sinus infections themselves are not contagious, but the causes of the sinus infection may be. The bacteria or virus that led to the infection can spread to others through coughing, sneezing, and sharing contaminated objects.

Can sinus infections lead to other ear or respiratory infections?

Yes, a sinus infection can lead to ear and respiratory infections, especially if it’s left untreated. The ears are close to the sinuses, making it easy for the fluid to spread and cause an infection.

When in Doubt

If you or someone else is experiencing severe or life-threatening symptoms and you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room. It’s always safer to seek immediate care rather than delay treatment.
