Ear pain, muffled hearing, or a child tugging at their ear could all be signs of an ear infection. Whether you’re an adult dealing with pressure and discomfort or a parent concerned about your child’s sStrep throat is a common and highly contagious bacterial infection that causes a sudden, painful sore throat. At InMotion Health, we provide rapid, personalized care for strep throat through virtual and in-home visits, eliminating the need to travel to a clinic when you’re feeling unwell. Our team ensures prompt testing, fast symptom relief, and tailored treatment plans so you can start feeling better without delay.

What Is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils. Unlike viral sore throats, strep is caused by Streptococcus bacteria and requires medical diagnosis and treatment. It spreads through airborne droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces, often affecting children, teens, and people in close-contact environments. The condition typically develops quickly and is more severe than a typical sore throat, often requiring antibiotics to prevent complications and stop the spread to others.

How Is Strep Throat Treated?

At InMotion Health, treatment for strep throat begins with an in-home rapid throat swab to confirm the diagnosis. If the test is positive, we provide appropriate antibiotic prescriptions as part of your tailored treatment plan. If further testing is needed, we can collect a throat swab for lab confirmation.

In addition to medication, we may recommend symptom management strategies such as over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, hydration with warm fluids, throat lozenges or saltwater gargles, and vocal rest. Every care plan is personalized and includes follow-up support to ensure a full recovery and prevent recurrence.

Strep Throat Treatment in Pediatric Patients

Children are especially susceptible to strep throat, and symptoms can escalate quickly. At InMotion Health, we offer same-day in-home visits to minimize stress for both child and parent. Our providers are trained to work with young patients and can perform throat swabs, deliver gentle care, and ensure accurate treatment in a familiar, calming environment. We also provide clear guidance to parents on medication use, hydration, and when to seek follow-up care.

Strep Throat Symptoms

Strep throat symptoms often include:

  • Sudden and severe sore throat
  • Painful swallowing
  • Red, swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches or streaks)
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Headache or body aches
  • Rash (in cases of scarlet fever)
  • Nausea or vomiting, especially in children

Unlike viral sore throats, strep typically does not cause coughing or a runny nose.

What Causes Strep Throat?

Streptococcus bacteria can spread through saliva or nasal secretions. It’s highly contagious and often passed between children at school or daycare, but adults can contract it as well. Touching shared surfaces, using shared utensils, or close contact with an infected person increases the risk of transmission.

Why Is Strep Throat Treatment Important?

Timely treatment for strep throat is essential because, if left untreated, the infection can lead to serious complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, tonsillar abscesses, or the spread of bacteria to the sinuses or middle ear. Starting antibiotics early helps alleviate symptoms more quickly, shortens the period of contagiousness, prevents long-term complications, and minimizes disruptions to school or work. This is especially important for children or individuals with preexisting conditions who may be more vulnerable to complications.

How Do I Support My Recovery From Strep Throat?

Take the full course of prescribed antibiotics, even if you begin to feel better after a few doses. You should avoid close contact with others for at least 24 hours after beginning antibiotics to prevent spreading the infection. It’s also helpful to disinfect commonly touched surfaces and replace your toothbrush once the infection clears. At InMotion Health, our providers will guide you through each step of your recovery to ensure your symptoms resolve fully and safely.
