Coughing that lingers, chest discomfort, and shortness of breath are all signs of the irritating and exhausting condition that can disrupt your daily life; bronchitis. At InMotion Health, we make getting care for bronchitis easy and stress-free. Our providers deliver personalized, timely treatment so you can recover quickly and comfortably from the familiarity of your own home.

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis occurs when the lining of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to your lungs, becomes inflamed. This inflammation often results in persistent coughing, mucus production, and chest tightness. There are two main types:

  1. Acute bronchitis: Usually triggered by a viral infection such as a cold or flu. It’s temporary but can cause severe symptoms for several days or weeks.
  2. Chronic bronchitis: A long-term condition, often caused by smoking or other environmental irritants. May be part of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Acute bronchitis is the more common of the two and is typically manageable with supportive care.

How is Bronchitis Treated?

Treatment for bronchitis depends on whether the infection is viral or bacterial, as well as the severity of your symptoms. At InMotion Health, we’ll begin with a thorough assessment of your breathing after we review your medical history and evaluate any risk factors. If your symptoms indicate the possibility of other respiratory conditions like COVID-19, flu, or RSV, we can perform in-home point-of-care testing, and if needed, send out samples for further evaluation through our trusted lab partners. If a bacterial infection is confirmed, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Most cases of acute bronchitis are viral and focus on supportive care, including rest and increased fluid intake. We may recommend over-the-counter medications to help manage discomfort, and patients experiencing wheezing or shortness of breath can be prescribed inhalers or bronchodilators to improve breathing. We also carry a portable nebulizer for quick, effective treatment and relief right in your home.

Bronchitis Symptoms

Bronchitis symptoms can vary in severity and often mimic those of other respiratory infections. Common signs include:

  • Persistent cough, often producing mucus
  • Wheezing or noisy breathing
  • Chest discomfort or tightness
  • Fatigue
  • Mild fever and chills
  • Shortness of breath (especially with exertion)

If your symptoms persist for more than a week or worsen, medical evaluation is essential.

What Causes Bronchitis?

Most acute bronchitis cases are caused by viral infections, especially following colds or the flu. Less commonly, bacteria may be the culprit. Other potential causes or contributing factors include:

  • Exposure to cigarette smoke
  • Air pollution or chemical fumes
  • Dust or allergens
  • Chronic respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD

Children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are more prone to complications.

Why Is Bronchitis Treatment Important?

For individuals with asthma, COPD, or other chronic lung conditions, bronchitis can trigger flare-ups that make breathing more difficult and recovery more complex. Seeking care early can ease coughing and respiratory symptoms, reduce the risk of worsening illness, identify other potential respiratory infections like COVID-19 or RSV, and help patients avoid unnecessary emergency room visits.

How Should I Support My Recovery From Bronchitis?

Get plenty of rest to allow your body the time it needs to recover, and stay well hydrated to help thin mucus and ease congestion. Using a humidifier or breathing in steam can help soothe irritated airways and make it easier to breathe. Avoid exposure to smoke or environmental irritants, which can worsen inflammation. If your symptoms persist, return, or worsen, our team is here to reassess and adjust your care as needed.
