Read MoreAsthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects the airways, making it difficult to breathe when symptoms flare. While some cases are severe and require intensive management, many people live with mild asthma, where symptoms are infrequent or triggered only by specific situations, such as allergens, exercise, or cold air. Even when symptoms are mild, early and effective treatment is crucial to prevent complications and ensure long-term lung health.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrowed, making it harder to move air in and out of the lungs. In people with mild asthma, symptoms typically occur less than twice a week and nighttime symptoms are rare. However, even mild cases can cause discomfort, interfere with daily life, and increase the risk of more serious flare-ups if left unmanaged.
How is Asthma Treated?
InMotion Health’s asthma treatment begins with an at-home or virtual consultation where we review your symptoms, medical history, known triggers, and current medications. At‑home care includes a licensed medical provider coming to your home to evaluate you in person. We can perform rapid in-home point-of-care testing to rule out flu, COVID-19, or RSV. If additional, more detailed diagnostic testing is needed, we partner with HealthTrackRx to send out PCR tests for further evaluation.
For mild asthma, treatment typically involves the use of short-acting bronchodilators for fast symptom relief, along with guidance on avoiding triggers and flare-up prevention. We carry a portable nebulizer for quick, effective treatment and relief right in your home.
We may also recommend that you monitor your oxygen levels at home using a pulse oximeter and offer lifestyle modifications to support long‑term lung health.
Asthma Symptoms
Symptoms of mild asthma may include:
- Occasional wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing
- Shortness of breath during physical activity or in response to triggers
- Tightness in the chest
- Intermittent coughing, especially at night or early in the morning
Although mild, these symptoms can still impact your quality of life and may become more severe without proper treatment.
What Causes Asthma?
Common asthma triggers include:
- Allergens (like pollen, dust, or pet dander)
- Viral infections
- Air pollution
- Smoke
- Physical exertion
Asthma often develops due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. You may be more likely to develop asthma if you have a family history of allergies or asthma, or if you were exposed to allergens, pollution, or respiratory infections early in life.
Why Is Asthma Treatment Important?
Even when symptoms are mild, asthma can worsen over time or become dangerous in response to common triggers or respiratory infections. Prompt and consistent treatment is critical to prevent asthma attacks, maintain open and healthy airways, and support proper lung function. Early intervention not only helps you stay ahead of flare-ups but also protects your long-term respiratory health.
How Should I Support My Recovery From Asthma?
Managing mild asthma at home is very achievable with the right tools and habits. It’s important to use your prescribed inhalers as directed and to avoid known triggers such as smoke, allergens, or cold air whenever possible. Monitoring your symptoms and using a pulse oximeter as advised can help you detect changes early. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, good hydration, and proper sleep, also plays a key role in keeping your lungs strong.
