Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It spreads easily from person to person through droplets in the air when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks. Fortunately at InMotion Health, we provide fast, effective care from the comfort of your home to help you or your loved one recover quickly and safely.

What Is Influenza?

Influenza is an acute viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Unlike the common cold, flu symptoms usually come on suddenly and can be more intense. Flu season typically runs from fall through spring, with peak activity in the colder months. There are several strains of the flu virus, each of which change from year to year.

How Is Influenza Treated?

Flu treatment begins with a virtual or in-home visit, during which our licensed providers will review your symptoms, medical history, and risk factors to determine the best course of action. During your in-home urgent care visit, we can perform rapid influenza testing in the comfort of your home. If more detailed results are needed, we’ll send your sample to our partner lab, HealthTrackRx, for rapid PCR testing.

Treatment for the flu depends on how early care begins and the severity of your symptoms. Common treatments may include antiviral medications to shorten the duration of illness along with fever reducers and pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. We may also recommend hydration support to prevent complications from fever and dehydration, as well as rest and nutrition guidance to help your body recover.

Influenza Treatment in Pediatric Patients

Children can be especially vulnerable to influenza, and symptoms may include high fever, fatigue, body aches, coughing, vomiting, and ear pain. InMotion Health offers pediatric flu care with family-friendly service. If your child is struggling with flu symptoms, a licensed medical provider can visit your home and perform a thorough in‑person evaluation. We’re able to perform in-home rapid testing and start treatment immediately when appropriate.

Influenza Symptoms

Common flu symptoms include:

  • Sudden fever and chills
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Sore throat and cough
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Headache
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Nausea or vomiting (more common in children)

Symptoms can last from a few days to over a week.

What Causes Influenza?

Influenza is caused by different strains of the influenza virus, which spread rapidly in enclosed spaces or through close contact. The virus enters the body through the respiratory tract and can infect others even before symptoms begin. Certain individuals are at higher risk for complications, such as:

  • Young children
  • Older adults
  • Those with chronic illnesses

Why Is Influenza Treatment Important?

Prompt treatment is key to minimizing the impact of influenza. Early care plays a critical role in protecting others by reducing the risk of spreading the virus. Timely treatment can also help you avoid unnecessary ER visits or prolonged discomfort; this is especially important for high-risk individuals.

How Do I Support My Recovery From Influenza?

To support recovery from the flu, it’s essential to follow your provider’s recommendations and prioritize rest and hydration. Drinking clear fluids can help replenish lost fluids and ease symptoms; getting plenty of sleep, avoiding strenuous activity, and using medications as prescribed will help manage fever and body aches. Isolation from others should be maintained until at least 24 hours after a fever subsides to reduce the spread of infection.

Influenza FAQs

What are the most common symptoms of the flu?

Some of the most common symptoms of the flu include high fever, chills, fatigue, body aches, and sore throat. Persistent cough, runny nose, headaches, and gastrointestinal symptoms can also be signs of the flu.

How does the flu spread from person to person?

The flu spreads from person to person through respiratory droplets. These droplets spread through coughing, sneezing, or even talking. They can also be inhaled by others and spread when the droplets land on doorknobs, countertops, or phones.

How are flu symptoms treated?

More often than not, flu symptoms can be treated with rest, plenty of fluids, and over-the-counter medications. In some cases, antiviral medications are prescribed to shorten how long the illness lasts and to reduce the severity of symptoms. For these medications to be most effective, they should be started within 48 hours of symptom onset, which is why it’s important to get tested and treated early. At InMotion Health, we offer virtual visits, in-home exams, and rapid flu testing.

When should I seek urgent care for the flu?

You should come to urgent care if you have a high fever that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter medication, severe sore throat, ear pain, sinus pain, wheezing, mild shortness of breath, persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, or if your cough and flu symptoms are getting worse or lasting longer than 10 days. In some cases, the flu can become much more serious, and you may need to go straight to the emergency room. Warning signs that require emergency care include severe difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, signs of severe dehydration such as very little urination, dizziness, or fainting, confusion or trouble staying awake, or persistent and severe vomiting.

What is the difference between flu symptoms in children and adults?

While there are some commonalities between flu symptoms in children and adults, the differences can be important to understand. Gastrointestinal symptoms are usually more common in children than in adults, fevers are typically higher in children, and children have more severe symptoms overall because their immune systems aren’t as developed.

How can InMotion Health provide same-day flu testing and treatment at home?

At InMotion Health, our providers offer inu2011home exams and rapid diagnostic testing to ensure you can get the treatment you need as soon as possible. Once you are diagnosed, we’ll offer you personalized treatment to help you feel better sooner rather than later.

When is antiviral medication prescribed for the flu?

Antiviral medication can be prescribed for the flu for most people, but it is especially important for those at higher risk of complications, including older adults, pregnant individuals, people with chronic medical conditions, and those with weakened immune systems or taking medications that suppress the immune system.

What are the potential risks of leaving the flu untreated, particularly for individuals at higher risk of complications?

When the flu is left untreated, it can increase the risk of pneumonia, dehydration, secondary infections, worsening of chronic diseases, and sepsis. Older adults, pregnant individuals, people with chronic health conditions, and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable, which is why early testing and treatment are so important.

What complications can arise from the flu, and how are they prevented?

Flu complications include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections, and worsening chronic conditions like asthma or heart disease. Preventing these complications can include actions like getting an annual flu vaccine, practicing good hand hygiene, and receiving prompt testing and treatment if you do develop flu-like symptoms.

Why is timely treatment for the flu important?

Timely treatment for the flu is so important because it reduces the risk for complications, shortens how long the flu lasts, and decreases the intensity of your symptoms. Timely treatment (within the first 48 hours) is when medications are most effective.
