Read MoreRSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common but potentially serious respiratory infection that affects people of all ages. While many cases cause only mild, cold-like symptoms, RSV can sometimes lead to more serious illnesses like bronchiolitis or pneumonia. At InMotion Health, we offer convenient, at-home and virtual care to help you or your loved one recover quickly and safely.
What is RSV?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common and highly contagious virus that affects the respiratory tract. While most people recover in a week or two, RSV can cause serious illness in infants, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. It is one of the leading causes of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in young children and can also significantly impact seniors or those with chronic heart or lung conditions.
Symptoms of RSV
RSV symptoms can vary in severity but often include:
- Runny nose
- Coughing or wheezing
- Sneezing
- Fever
- Decreased appetite
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Fatigue or irritability (especially in children)
In infants, signs may also include flaring nostrils, rapid breathing, grunting, or bluish skin due to lack of oxygen.
How is RSV Treated?
There’s no specific cure for RSV, but supportive care can greatly ease symptoms and prevent complications. During your at-home visit with InMotion Health, we assess your symptoms, medical history, and any risk factors. We offer rapid RSV point-of-care testing right in your home for quick answers and peace of mind. If needed, we can also collect swabs for more detailed rapid PCR testing through our trusted lab partners. Treatment may include increased rest and fluid intake, over-the-counter medications to reduce fever or discomfort, and the use of humidifiers to help relieve congestion.
For individuals experiencing wheezing or breathing difficulty, inhalers or breathing treatments may be recommended. We carry a portable nebulizer for quick, effective treatment and relief right in your home. In high-risk patients, such as infants or the elderly, we may also recommend monitoring oxygen levels to ensure safe recovery. Additionally, we evaluate for other respiratory infections like flu or COVID-19, which can present with similar symptoms.
RSV in Children
RSV can be especially dangerous for babies and young children. InMotion Health offers pediatric-appropriate care, including in-home testing and treatment recommendations tailored to little ones aged 2 and older. If symptoms worsen or your child shows signs of labored breathing, dehydration, or lethargy, we recommend finding emergency care as soon as possible.
What Causes RSV?
RSV spreads through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also survive on surfaces and be transferred by touch. This makes it especially easy to catch in public settings like:
- Schools
- Daycare centers
- Shared living spaces
Peak RSV season typically occurs in the fall and winter months.
Why is RSV Treatment Important?
While mild cases of RSV can often be managed at home, prompt treatment is essential to prevent complications such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis. Early care can significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization, particularly in infants; by addressing symptoms quickly, treatment can also help shorten the duration of illness and prevent transmission to vulnerable family members.
How Should I Support My Recovery From RSV?
To recover from RSV, make sure to rest as much as possible and stay well-hydrated, as fluids help keep mucus thin and easier to clear. Using a cool-mist humidifier can improve breathing, especially at night, while approved over-the-counter medications can help manage fever and general discomfort.
Be sure to avoid exposure to smoke or other respiratory irritants, which can make symptoms worse. If your condition doesn’t improve within a few days or begins to worsen, InMotion Health is just a call or click away. We’ll reassess your condition and update your care plan with follow-up testing or treatment as needed.
